The pacifier in babies
Do we recommend the pacifier for babies?
Advantages of the pacifier
*Using the pacifier at bedtime has been identified as one of the protective factors for sudden infant death syndrome (this is exceptional over 12 months).
*Soothes babies and satisfies their need for non-nutritive sucking.
*Helps them fall asleep.
Disadvantages of the pacifier
Prolonged pacifier use is associated with:
- Appearance of caries.
- Dental malocclusion.
- Ogival palate.
- Speech impairment.
- Swallowing problems.
- Alterations in breathing.
- Greater risk of acute otitis media
It is true that health professionals recommend a minimal and controlled use of pacifiers in babies, we advise not to force their introduction, and if it is not essential, not to establish this habit.
It is also true that in parenting each family is a world, the needs and conditions of each nucleus are totally unique, and we are aware that what works in one home, may not work in another.
As health workers, we have a duty to inform families, so that each can choose their best option.
The 6 most frequently asked questions about pacifiers
1. Which pacifier to choose?
- Shield: better concave shape, without ring, flexible and with ventilation.
- The flatter and more flexible the teat, the better, physiological (avoid anatomical and above all not cherry-shaped!!!).
- Neck (connection of the teat to the shield): as thin as possible.
- Material: silicone.
2. If LM is performed, can a pacifier be used?
In case of Breastfeeding (LM) it is better to delay its use until LM is well established (around 6 weeks of life).
3.Bigger pacifier size for older baby?
The size should not be changed with age, except if the shield interferes with the lips.
4. How to use the pacifier?
Don’t offer it or use it on demand (avoid using a toothbrush), so its withdrawal will also be easier. Do not put weight on the pacifier either.
5. When to remove the pacifier?
Withdrawal before the age of 2, from the year onwards eliminate or limit its use (maximum 12-18 months).
6. Which pacifiers do we recommend for consultation?
